Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about COBOL AI and our modernization platform.

What is COBOL AI?

COBOL AI is a public-safe modernization workbench built by the PlatPhorm News Network. It runs deterministic static analysis, risk scoring, data dictionary extraction, cost estimation, compliance review, documentation generation, COBOL 2023 suggestions, and MCP/API tooling for legacy COBOL.

How does pricing work?

We offer dynamic pricing based on the complexity and length of your COBOL codebase. Our free automated analysis tool (available at /api/analyze) will give you an instant cost estimate before you start the translation process. Costs range from $0.02/line for trivial code to $0.40/line for complex enterprise modules.

Is my data secure?

Phase 1 does not persist source code server-side by default. Browser session history is AES-GCM encrypted locally with a 24-hour TTL, and PLATPHORM_API_KEY is never stored in browser storage. Model assistance is backend-only and returns a degraded state when no provider is configured.

Does translation work without a model provider?

Deterministic analysis, compliance, documentation, cost estimation, data dictionary extraction, ASCII rendering, and COBOL 2023 suggestions work without a model. Translation returns an explicit degraded response unless backend model configuration is present.

What is the PlatPhorm News Network?

The PlatPhorm News Network is a distributed web mesh of public and trusted tools. COBOL AI keeps its own COBOL modernization purpose while exposing the shared route, discovery, auth, trace, and MCP contract.
